The Core Principles of Information Security

Purpose

It is often assumed that Information Security only relates to the use of computer facilities. In fact information is an integral element in all aspects of business, including written and verbal communication. All employees regardless of their role and rank are involved in creating, processing, analysing and communicating information.

In this context the security aspect extends beyond the protection of information, and includes the way information is used and the possible consequences. There are several legislation already in place that address these aspects.

The aim of this course is to provide an overall understanding of the issues and risks involved in managing information within everyday business activities.

This course consists of the following components:

Lessons 1, defines information, the security of, what is concerned with, what should be protected, and who is responsible.

Lessons 2, provides an appreciation of Information Security Management System, how it could be implemented, and its essential components.

Lessons 3, covers threats and vulnerabilities associated with information handling and uses examples to highlight such issues

Lessons 4, provides advice on the use of information-media such as fax, phone, email, internet, and mobile devices.
